Dance Beyond Borders

dance beyond borders
An European pilot project for international dancing education
2008 – 2010
Hamburg, Antwerp, Lisbon, London, Arnheim

Together with international institutions and dance schools in five European countries it offers ten young, upcoming dancers and choreographers an education program. It was an idea initiated by Dance kiosk-Hamburg and SharingArts e.V. in cooperation with ArtEZ School of Dance, Escola Superior de Dança, Lisbon; London Metropolitan University - Performance as Research; and the Retina Dance Company, Belgium. The project was founded by the culture program of the European Commission and supported by Kampnagel Hamburg, Hamburger Sprechwerk und K3 – Zentrum für Choreographie, Hamburg.

The core of dance beyond borders dance program is made of residencies, two weeks each, hosted in four European cities, Hamburg, Lisbon, London and Antwerp. Each residency includes daily training in contemporary dance approaches with professional teachers as well as workshops with choreographers, video artists, theoreticians, composers, and musicians. A mentor will follow the participants throughout the project to support and encourage the participants to develop their awareness towards their physical landscape and their individual creative and artistic processes. Under a critical eye, a constant analysis and constant feedback the mentor roll is to support each young choreographer to create a performance work (e.g. - solo or group -, an installation, a lecture demonstration or a video work).

The results of the pilot project will be presented 2009 at the dance beyond borders Symposium during the international dance festival DanceKiosk Hamburg, July 17-31.
